I know it sounds bad, but I really judge books by their covers. The cover can reveal a lot about the author's style. A example of a book cover that caught my attention early was The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. The book didn't really end up to be my style, but I still enjoyed it.Reviews on the front and back covers also affect my choice on whether to read a book. If a book is endorsed by something as reputable as the New York Times or Chicago Tribune I am more likely to consider reading it.
Finally, the synopsis on the back cover of a novel is very important to me. It is only through these summaries that one can get a first taste of what the story will be like.

good thoughts. Reviews, I think, are taken for granted sometimes. They can definitely be a good way to judge a book.
Don't feel bad, we all judge books by covers. Good point on whether the book is recognized by something like the NY times, i like it.
